The Allegeheny River in Pennsylvania was damed by the Kinzua Dam in the late 50's/early 60's when I was still young. I remember taking trips with my parents to the "Red House" area and driving through the small towns and residences on the Indian reservation that now lie at the bottom of the lake in this picture. The Indians got partial revenge though. The city of Salamanca, NY on the river was on Indian land north of the present lake and had been leased from the Indians for a period of one hundred years. When the lease ran out a decade or so ago, they refused an inadequate financial settlement from the state and took back their land and the city that is still on it. |
